Eternal vs. Everlasting

"Eternal" vs. "Everlasting" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of these terms are used to describe something that lasts forever. However, 'eternal' indicates something that has no beginning and no end. It typically relates to abstract concepts or spiritual matters. 'Everlasting', though, is about something that has a beginning but never ends. It can refer to both concrete and abstract things and suggests ongoing duration or continuity.

Differences

As mentioned above, when something is eternal, it has existed and it will continue to exist. In other words, it has no beginning and no ending. Look below:

Example

In many cultures, people believe that spirits are eternal.

Love is often considered an eternal emotion.

'Everlasting' refers to something that has a beginning. However, it will last forever. Let us check out the examples below:

Example

This invention will have an ever lasting impact on humanity.

And may you all find ever lasting peace within you.

Similarities

As stated above, they both describe the existence of something and refer to it as living forever. Look:

Example

Researchers have found out that plastic is ever lasting in nature.

I don't really believe in spirits, let alone eternal ones.

Are They Interchangeable?

In most cases, most people use these two words interchangeably. Compare:

Example

✓ I hope you find true, ever lasting love, Hannah!

✓ I hope you find true, eternal love, Hannah!

According to Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight. So! If God punishes finite beings, forever! He would be an abomination to himself!
