"Forceful" vs. "Forcible" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of these words describe how we act or how something is done. However, 'forceful' is used when something is influential, or when someone is self-assured. 'Forcible', on the other hand, refers to something that is done by force, sometimes even violence.

Differences

As I mentioned above, 'forceful' refers to someone that is confident and determined. It can also refer to something that is influential. Look at the following examples:

In his forceful manner, the manager walked by and headed towards his room.

Unfortunately, Linda does not have a forceful personality.

'Forcible', on the other hand, refers to doing something with force and sometimes violence. Let us check out the examples below:

They took the poor woman into the van forcibly.

In a forcible manner, mom took me to the hospital.

Similarities

Both refer to how we describe something or someone. Look:

The employee forcibly went out the office, angering the boss.

I'm astounded by her forceful manner.

Are They Interchangeable?

These two cannot be used interchangeably because one refers to being assertive, whereas the other one refers to conducting something violently. Compare:

✓ Leaders are expected to have forceful personalities.

X Leaders are expected to have forcible personalities.
