In this lesson, I'm gonna teach you all the similarities and differences between a 'festival' and a 'celebration'. Wanna come?

"Festival" vs. "Celebration" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of them refer to throwing big parties and having fun. However, a 'celebration' is usually private and some people organize a party to celebrate special events like birthdays, engagements, etc. A 'festival', however, is public and includes a chain of enjoyable and musical events.

Differences

As mentioned above, A 'celebration' is private and refers to some people organizing and planning a party in order to celebrate a special event like a birthday. Check the following examples:

Tonight's celebration is dedicated to Emma and Anna's everlasting love.

I hate engagement celebrations.

A 'festival', on the other hand, is for the public and it contains a series of pleasurable and musical events. Take a look at the examples below:

Brazil is mostly famous for its colorful and musical festivals.

Do you like to go to festivals or do you prefer to remain home alone and read for yourself?

Similarities

As mentioned above, they are both events in which we can dance, listen to music, drink and have fun. Check out the following examples:

The annual festival is on its way and many are expected about it.

I know you don't wanna hear this but I don't feel like coming to your birthday celebration tonight.

Are They Interchangeable?

Despite the fact that they both refer to a kind of pleasurable event in which there is dancing, music, and fun, they cannot be used interchangeably because birthdays and special events are not considered festivals. Compare:

✓ Let's have a celebration for Andy's birthday this weekend.

X Let's have a festival for Andy's birthday this weekend.

As you can see, we cannot have a festival for birthdays.
