"Invoke" vs. "Evoke" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

We use 'invoke' to indicate seeking help and support, whereas, 'evoke' refers to bringing back a certain feeling or memory.

Differences

As stated above, 'invoke' indicates searching for support or help. Take a look at the examples below:

Example

Sabrina invoked Lucifer's powers whenever she needed them.

They say if you are in a difficult situation, invoke the help of God.

'Evoke', on the other hand, refers to remembering different feelings and memories from the past. Check out the examples below:

Example

Going to meadow evoked many cheerful memories in Catherine.

This particular scent evoked painful events in Brian.

Similarities

These two do not have any similairites.

Are They Interchangeable?

As it is obvious, these two are totally different. 'Invoke' refers to seeking someone's help, whereas, 'evoke' is when someone remembers a particular feeling. So, they cannot be used interchangeably. Compare:

Example

✓ The child's cries evoked the traumatic events Evelin had experienced in childhood.

X The child's cries invoked the traumatic events Evelin had experienced in childhood.

As you can see, this one does not make any sense.
