"Illness" vs. "Disease" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to being sick and not feeling well. Their only difference is that 'diseases' are mainly caused by bacteria and can be contagious and that we use the term 'disease' for other non-human creatures, and illness is only used for human beings.

Differences

We can say that bacteria mainly cause 'diseases' so they can pass on from one creature to another. Also, non-human creatures like plants and animals can have diseases, but not illnesses. Look at the examples below:

Example

We have learned about many heart diseases this week.

She has been struggling with this illness for a long period of time.

Similarities

As stated above, these two are somehow similar in that they both refer to a creature that is not feeling well. Take a look at the following examples:

I've recently been showing signs of a weird illness.

Are They Interchangeable?

Most people use them interchangeably. Although remember that non-human creatures do not have illnesses, they have diseases. Compare:
