"Solve" vs. "Resolve" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both indicate drawing a conclusion about something. However, 'solve' refers to finding solutions to problems like mathematics, systematic errors, riddles, et. while, 'resolve' refers to working out personal conflicts, arguments, emotional problems, etc.

Differences

As stated above, 'solve' mainly focuses on mathematical, systematic, functioning problems. It is more objective in a sense. Check out the following examples:

How were you able to solve this Rubik's cube?

You don't have to be a genius to solve this. You just have to be smart.

'Resolve', on the other hand, is more about finding solutions and ending personal conflicts, emotional problems, controversies, etc. It is more subjective, in a sense. Look at the examples below:

I'm happy you guys were finally able to resolve your conflicts.

I'm here in fact to resolve the disagreement between you two.

Similarities

Both refer to drawing conclusions for different problems. Take a look below:

Jenny can't keep running away from her problems and expect them to solve on their own.

After a while, Adam came back into the room and said: 'We will resolve this tonight'.

Are They Interchangeable?

If we do not mention the type of problem, we can use them interchangeably. Note that when we are referring to the kind of problem we are dealing with, it is better to use them properly. Compare:

✓ No problem is impossible to solve, to be honest.

✓ No problem is impossible to resolve, to be honest.
