"Woman" vs. "Lady" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

They both refer to the female gender in humans. However, a 'woman' is an adult that has reached maturity, whereas, as 'lady' usually describes women of high social status.

Differences

The word 'woman' refers to a an adult female who has reached the age of maturity and is no longer a child. Look at the examples below:

A 'lady', however, refers to women who have high status in society. Check out the following examples:

In matters like who is gonna enter a place first they say: Ladies first', but when it comes to human rights, they say: 'Sorry'.

They both indicate mature female human beings. Take a look below:

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they are synonyms, they cannot be used interchangeably because 'woman' refers to grown-up females in general, whereas, 'lady' indicates women of high social status. Compare:

✓ Men and women are fighting for liberty along side each other.

X Men and lady are fighting for liberty along side each other.

As you can see, this examples is incorrect.
