What Is Their Main Difference?

Both are ways to show your assent. However, 'yea' is mainly used in a vote, while, 'yeah' is the informal speech form of 'yes'.

'Yea' is mainly used for a vote, when 'yeah' is the informal, speech form of affirming something. Look at the examples below:

Example

Let's go to a club and dance, yea or nay?

A:

I think our people have a long way to go in order to understand such concepts.

B:

Yeah, the public are way too illiterate.

Similarities

They are both forms of showing one's agreement with something. Check out the examples below:

Example

The crowd voted: 'yea'

A:

It seems that the majority of people have finally become aware of their rights.

B:

Yeah, hopefully.

Are They Interchangeable?

These two are not used interchangeably because 'yay' is mainly used for a vote, whereas, 'yeah' is used for daily affirmations. Compare:

Example

✓ So, how about eating at a nice, fancy restaurant. Yea or nay?

X So, how about eating at a nice, fancy restaurant. Yeah or nay?

As you can see, this example is incorrect.
