"Spilled" vs. "Spilt" in the English Grammar

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both are past tenses and past participles of the verb 'spill'. However, 'spilt' is the old form and it is not used anymore, whereas, 'spilled' is the preferred spelling.

Differences

'Spilt' is the archaic spelling, while, 'spilled' is the preferred spelling. Look at the examples:

The waiter was so clumsy that he spilled the beers.

For a moment, I thought Mariana spilt the tea.

Similarities

Both are past tense and past pasrticiples of the verb 'spill'. Look at the examples below:

What would've happened if Harry hadn't spilled coffee on our guests?

You expect me to be cool when he just spilt the drinks one me?

Are They Interchangeable?

Most native speakers use these two interchangeably. Compare:

✓ John stumbled and spilled all the drinks.

✓ John stumbled and spilt all the drinks.
