What Is Their Main Difference?

These two are homophones. However, 'sole' indicates one thing/person, and also points to someone's underfoot, while, 'soul' refers to the spiritual side of animate creatures.

Differences

'Sole' can function as both a noun and an adjective. As a noun, it refers to someone's underfoot, and as an adjective, it describes one thing/person. 'Soul', on the other hand, refers to the spiritual side of live creatures. Look at the following examples:

He performed on the stage solely.

Here, it is an adjective.

There's dirt on your sole.

A broken soul, heart turned to stone, eyes empty, what more do you want?

Similarities

These two have no similarities other than their identical pronunciations.

Are They Interchangeable?

'Sole' can be an adjective and a noun, whereas, 'soul' is only a noun. So, they cannot be used interchangeably. It is important to point out that they have different meanings. Compare:

X My soul intention was to deceive you into falling for me again.
