Stop vs. Pause

What is the difference between 'stop' and 'pause'?

'Stop' and 'pause' are both terms that involve interruption of an action or process. However, 'stop' indicates a complete and definite termination of an action or process, while 'pause' implies a temporary interruption with an intention to resume.

Duration

When something is stopped, it generally implies a complete and definitive termination of the activity or process. It often suggests a longer or indefinite pause, with no intention of resuming. Pausing, on the other hand, implies a temporary interruption or break in the activity or process. It suggests a shorter and more transient interruption and implies that the action or process will be resumed after a brief interval.

Example

The teacher asked the students to stop running in the hallways.

She paused for a moment to collect her thoughts before answering the question.

I need to stop the video recording because the camera battery died.

I need to pause the video recording to change the camera battery.
