Are you confused about when to use 'with' or 'along with' or if they are interachangeable?

"With" vs. "Along With" in the English grammar

What Is Their Main Difference?

The main difference between 'with' and 'along with' is that 'with' is a preposition and 'along with' is a phrase composed of the prepositions 'with' and 'along.'

Together with Someone or Something

When we want to show that another accompanied something or someone, we use 'with' or 'along with.' Have a look:

I went to the bar with my friends.

I went to the bar along with my friends.

Are They Interchangeable?

'With' can always replace 'along with' but 'along with' cannot replace 'with' unless it is used to indicate the meaning of 'together with.' This is because 'with' has various other functions and shares none of them with 'along with,' like indicating possession and tools used to fulfill an action.

She killed her husband with knife.

Here, we are showing an instrument that was used for an action.

She killed her husband along with knife.

A car with the tinted windows was parked here.

Here we are showing the possession of 'a car.'

A car along with the tinted windows was parked here.
