Such
'Such' is a widely-used vocabulary in English. It is sometimes mixed with 'enough.' In this lesson, I have tried to cover its uses in detail.
Functions of 'Such'
1. 'Such' as a Determiner
Use
'Such' as a determiner stands before a noun and indicates three functions:
Something or someone with a great in degree, amount, number, or quality:
I don’t like to read a book in such detail.
It was not in such bad shape.
Such nonsense bugs me.
Something is in a specified kind:
Such methods need to be adopted in our educational system.
I don't care about such things.
Something has a quality that results in something specified, in this case, we use the formula (such + noun... as/that...)
They had such behavior that/as their kids were afraid.
My mother wanted such thing that nobody could afford.
Position in a Sentence
'Such' as a determiner comes before a plural or a singular noun to describe it. It is important to know that the modified nouns do not take any articles.
My mother wanted such thing that nobody could afford.
I don't care about such things.
2. 'Such' as a Pre-determiner
Use
'Such' as a pre-determiner stands before an article to modify a noun or a noun phrase. It can be used in three ways:
Something or someone with a great in degree, amount, number, or quality:
It was not in such a bad shape.
'a bad shape' is described as it means 'in a very bad shape.'
It was such a pleasant surprise.
Something of a specified kind:
Such a method needs to be adopted in our educational system.
Something has a quality that results in something specified, in this case, we use the formula (such + noun... as/that...):
They had such a bad behavior that/as their kids were afraid.
I was in such a hurry as I missed my bag.
Position in a Sentence
'Such' as a pre-determiner comes before an article and modifies a noun. It is called a pre-determiner because it precedes a determiner that is an article. The modified noun can be plural or singular. For example:
Such a method needs to be adopted in our educational system.
It was such a pleasant surprise.
3. 'Such' as a Pronoun
Use
'Such' as a pronoun is used in formal situations and replaces a noun it refers to. It has two functions:
'Such' as a pronoun is used to refer to a kind or type of person or thing;
It is a severe accident and must be treated as such.
as an accident.
He is an engineer and is paid as such.
'Such' as a pronoun indicates something previously stated or specified:
If such is good, we can proceed.
That is too hard. I need a work of such.
Position in a Sentence
'Such' as a pronoun replaces a noun it refers to, so it can be an object, a subject, etc.
That is too hard. I need a work of such.
