You may have noticed the word 'although' in many sentences. 'Although' mainly functions as a conjunction. In this lesson, we will discover more.

How to Use "Although" in English?

'Although' mainly functions as a conjunction. In this lesson, we will discuss how to learn and use it.

Functions of 'Although'

'Although' as a Conjunction

'Although' functions as a conjunction in sentences. Below, we are going to analyze the kind of conjunction it is:

Use

'Although' as a Subordinating Conjunction

Mainly, 'although' is a subordinating conjunction. Look:

  • One is to indicate that despite the fact that something happened, the result is still surprising. Take a look:

She remained calm, although she had been betrayed badly.

Although I could see the sun in the sky, the weather was still chilly.

  • The next one is to show contradiction and it means 'but':

You can respond to her text, although I warn you that you won't be happy with what comes after.

She can fight with herself, although there will only be more negative results.

Position in a Sentece

'Although' always comes before the subordinate clause. Note that if it is at the beginning of the sentence, we must put a comma when the subordinate clause finishes; and when it is used in the middle of the sentence, a comma is used before it. Look:

I can let you inside, although I will not guarantee what my mother will do if she finds out.

As you can see, a comma is necessary before the conjunction when it comes in the middle of the sentence.

Although she lost the match, she didn't nag at her co-players.

Here, a comma is used between the two clauses when 'although' is used at the beginning of the sentence.
