"End" vs. "Finish" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both are used to indicate that something has come to a stop. However, we mainly use 'finish' when we complete something, but 'end' is mostly used to indicate stopping something.

Differences

For the majority of time, we use 'finish' to point out that we have completed something. Check out the following examples:

I finished homework yesterday.

When will the presentation finish?

'End', however, is used to talk about stopping something. Look at the following examples:

Example

I wanna end this conversation right now.

When will this seminar end? I'm bored.

Similarities

Both of them indicate that something has come to a stop. Take a look at the following examples:

Now, we're going to end our discussion.

When will Martha finish practicing?

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they somehow refer to the same situation, it is better not to use them interchangeably. In some contexts, however, both make sense. Compare:

✓ The teacher ended the class earlier than expected.

✓ The teacher finished the class earlier than expected.
