Each vs. Every

In this lesson, we're gonna learn about how these two words are different from one another. You know, these grammatical functions are common.

"Each" vs. "Every" in the English Grammar

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both of them refer to singular objects. However, 'each' points out one single item/individual, whereas, 'every' indicates one single item to talk about all of them in general. Also, 'each' is a determiner, a pronoun and an adverb, but 'every' can only be a determiner.

Differences

'Each', as mentioned above, refers to a single item or an individual. It can also have different grammatical functions. It can be a determiner, a pronoun, or an adverb. Look at the following examples:

Each student must hand in their report until midnight.

Here, 'each' is a determiner.

They each have an ice cream.

'Each' is a pronoun here.

We will have one peperoni pizza and a coke each.

Here, 'each' is an adverb.

Let us talk about 'every' now. Every' is only a determiner and we use it to talk about a single item or an individual to refer to all of its kind in general. Let us analyze the following examples:

Every dollar we spent on this machine will be wasted.

I don't want you to lecture me about every problem in my life.

Similarities

Both of them can be determiners and they refer to single objects/individuals. Examine the following examples:

Each girl that violates the rules will be punished severely.

Every bit of my heart longs for you.

Are They Interchangeable?

These two words cannot be used interchangeably because they have both different grammatical functions and meanings. Compare:

✓ I hugged each of them and left.

X I hugged every of them and left.

As you can see, this one is not correct.
