What Is Their Main Difference?
Basically, they both refer to where something/someone is. However, 'location' is more about the structure of the place, its address, its number, etc. whereas, 'place' is mainly concerned with how the place looks like.
Differences
As mentioned above, when we use 'location', we mainly talk about the structure of a particular place we are referring to. When we want to give someone the address to a place, we are providing her with the location. Look at the examples below:
I don't know how to send my location via Whatsapp.
It seems that the company is moving to a new location so, the employees are supposed to work offline for some time.
'Place', however, is more about the physical setting. It can indicate someone's position, a particular area, etc. Check out the examples below:
I'm going to John's place.
I can help you find a place to live temporarily.
Similarities
As stated above, both refer to where something/someone is. Take a look below:

Do you expect Dracula to send you the location of his castle?
Are They Interchangeable?
Although they are close in meaning, we cannot use them interchangeably. 'Location' is more about the address, whereas, 'place' is more about the position. Compare:
✓ I forgot to say that I'm staying at Martha's place tonight.
X I forgot to say that I'm staying at Martha's location tonight.
As you can see, this one does not really make sense.
