"Learn" vs. "Study" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both refer to gaining information on a particular subject. However, 'study' is more academic. When we 'study', we mainly gain knowledge by attending schools, classes, books, etc. 'Learn', on the other hand, is more experimental. We can learn from several failures, conducting experiments, etc.

Differences

As stated above, 'study' is more academic. We study when we go to school, university, a particular class, elc. Look at the examples below:

I studied English literature in university.

I wish I had studied more during the semester.

'Learn', on the other hand, is not limited to academic studies. We can learn different things through experimenting, failures, etc. Check out the following examples:

She hurt me but I learned many great life lessons.

It might sound crazy but the only way to let go of the past is to learn from your mistakes.

Similarities

Both refer to acquiring knowledge in a particular area. Study the following examples:

What do you wish to study when you enter The Queen Mary university?

My therapist always says make of list of what you learn every day.

Are They Interchangeable?

Although both are used in the same context, they cannot be used interchangeably. Compare:

✓ Where did you learn to bake such delicious cupcakes?

X Where did you study to bake such delicious cupcakes?

As you can see, this one does not really make sense.
