"Libel" vs. "Slander" in English

What Is Their Main Difference?

They are both ways to ruin someone's reputation. However, 'libel' is the written statement of destruction, whereas, 'slander' is the spoken form.

Differences

'Libel', basically, is the written statement to destroy someone's reputation. 'Slander', on the other hand, is the spoken form. Look at the examples below:

Similarities

They are both forms of ruining someone's reputation. Check out the examples below:

They arrested me for libel.

The manager declared that he cannot stand slanders about his company.

Are They Interchangeable?

Due to their slight differences, these two cannot be used interchangeably. Both examples below are correct bt they are a little different in meaning. Compare:

Example

✓ Toxic systems tend to use slanders as a way to frighten the people.

✓ Toxic systems tend to use libels as a way to frighten the people.

This indicates a written form of defamation so it differs a bit.
