These two are only similar in that they are pronounced the same. However, 'course' refers to a subject we study, while, 'coarse' refers to something rough and not smooth.

'Coarse' describes something rough, whereas, 'course' is a filed we study. Look at the examples below:

These two share no similarities other than they have similar pronunciations.
