to break down [verb]

(of a machine or vehicle) to stop working as a result of a malfunction

Ex: The printer suddenly broke down , causing a delay in printing documents .

to make a brief stop at a place while on the way to another location

Ex: They called by the museum to see the new exhibit before continuing their journey .

to cut off [verb]

to use a sharp object like scissors or a knife on something to remove a piece from its edge or ends

to start talking about something that is different from the topic of the discussion
