Usually vs. Often

This time, we've thought about discussing the differences and similarities between 'usually' and 'often'. Well, I'm ready. How about you?

"Usually" vs. "Often" in the English Grammar

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both are adverbs of frequency that show how frequently an action takes place. However, 'usually' indicates doing something on a regular basis. So, it becomes a habit, but 'often' implies an action that happens frequently but it is not on a regular basis. In other words, it is not part of our routine.

Differences

When we use 'usually', we indicate that we do something on a regular basis. It has become a habit. Look at the examples below:

We usually drink coffee for breakfast.

When do you usually go to bed?

'Often', on the other hand, indicates doing something frequently but is unpredictable. Note tat we do not use 'often' for our habits. Check out the following examples:

How often do you go shopping?

I often go to the theater with my friends.

Similarities

Both are adverbs of frequency that show how frequently an action takes place. Look at the examples below:

Hannah often comes to this café.

I wanted to say that I usually read a book before work.

Are They Interchangeable?

Although they are both adverbs of frequency, they cannot be used interchangeably because 'usually' points out habits, whereas, 'often' indicates doing something frequently, but not on a regular basis. Both examples are correct below but they have different meanings. Compare:

✓ I often watch popular Netflix series.

✓ I usually watch popular Netflix series.
