"Under" vs. "Below" in the English Grammar

What Is Their Main Difference?

Both have similar grammatical functions. They are both prepositions and adverbs. Similarly, they both indicate being at a lower place. However, 'under' can also indicate being controlled by a more powerful force.

Differences

'Under' also indicates being controlled by another external, often more powerful force. It can create different collocations like 'under control', 'under pressure', 'under the influence', 'under a spell', etc. Look at the following examples:

This expression indicates being able to maintain your power over someone and make them do what you want.

A : What do you expect me to do?

B : Just understand that I am under too much pressure right now and give me some time.

'Below' mainly indicates the position of something/someone that is lower than another thing/person. Check out the following examples:

You can find the necessary information on how you can apply below.

Similarities

Both can function as prepositions and adverbs. Also, they refer to something/someone being in a lower position from someone or something else. Check out the following examples:

A : Where did you say you last saw Lucy?

B : Under the table.

Are They Interchangeable?

We can sometimes use them interchangeably when they both indicate the lower position of something/someone. However, avoid using them interchangeably otherwise. Compare:
