The main difference between 'although' and 'though' is in their formality. 'Although' is generally more formal than 'though.'

As a Conjunction

'Although' and 'though' can be used as a conjunction. They are classified as concession subordinating conjunctions. These type of conjunctions are used to show that something has happened in spite of a hurdle. In this case, 'although' and 'though' are interchangeable. Have a look:

Although it was windy, it was a warm day.

Though it was windy, it was a warm day.

As an Adverb

'Though' can also be used as an adverb. For instance:

We used to be close friends. I haven't talked to her forever, though.

He knew he was wrong, though he never apologized.

Meaning

As mentioned earlier, 'although' and 'though' express concession. We use them to express that something has happened despite a hurdle. Note that 'although' and 'though' are interchangeable in this context. For example:

Although they were trying to be quiet, I could hear them very well.

Though they were trying to be quiet, I could hear them very well.

We also discovered earlier that 'though' is used as an adverb to express the meaning 'however.' In this context, we cannot use 'although' and 'though' interchangeably. Have a look:
