Vad är förkortningar?
Förkortningar på engelska är förkortade former av ord, där två ord kombineras och vissa bokstäver tas bort.
Hur man bildar förkortningar
För att bilda förkortningar används ett enda apostrof istället för den borttagna bokstaven.
I’m here. → I am here.
Jag är här.
She’s here → She is here.
Hon är här.
När man ska använda förkortningar
Förkortningar används i olika sammanhang. Här är några av de viktigaste:
Förkortade former av verbet "to be"
De olika formerna av verbet "to be", inklusive "am", "is" och "are", kan förkortas. Till exempel:
She’s coming. → She is coming.
Hon kommer.
We’re talking → We are talking
Vi pratar.

Negativa hjälpverb och modala verb
"Not" används för att göra verb negativa. För att använda en förkortad form av det negativa verbet tas bokstaven "o" bort och ett apostrof används istället. Detta kan göras med både modala och hjälpverb.

Varning!
För att använda den förkortade formen av "I am not" kan endast "to be"-verbet förkortas, inte det negativa ordet. Så den förkortade formen blir "I'm not" istället för "I amn't".
Modala verb görs också negativa genom att använda "not". Precis som hjälpverb kan de förkortas genom att ta bort bokstaven "o" från "not". Till exempel:
She shouldn't go. → She should not go.
Hon bör inte gå.
He can’t sing. → He cannot sing.
Han kan inte sjunga.
