What Are Greetings?

Greetings are words or actions used to say hello and show respect to someone when you meet.

Formal Greetings

Formal greetings are used when meeting someone that is not familiar or friendly, for example in the work place. For example:

  • Hello!
  • Pleased to meet you.
  • It's a pleasure to meet you.

Informal Greetings

Formal greetings are not common when talking to more familiar and friendly people. Instead, informal greetings are used in these situations. For example:

  • Hi!
  • What's up?

How’s it going? Informal
How are you? Neutral
Good morning/afternoon/evening/night! Neutral

Tip!

Good morning is used from 5 AM to 12 PM.
Good afternoon is used from 12 PM to 6 PM.
Good evening is used from 6 PM to 9 PM.
Good night is used after 9 PM or before going to bed.

There are different ways to say goodbye to people when leaving them. For example:
