How Do We Express Dates?

Expressing dates involves writing the month, day, and year to refer to a specific day on the calendar.

How to Ask About Dates?

To ask about the date, the following questions can be used. The answers to these questions start with “It is…”.

Example

- What day is it? + It is December 24th.

- What month is it? + It is August.

- What year is it? + It’s 2023.

Names of the Days

A week has 7 days. The following list gives the names of weekdays:

Names of Months

A year has 12 months. Each month has 4 weeks and 29 to 31 days. Take a look at the list below:

How to Write the Dates

Now, to read the date, start with the first number which is the day. Then, move on to the month, and then the year.

In order to read the date, use ordinal numbers. Look at the list below to learn some of them:

1 → First

2 → Second

3 → Third

4 → Fourth

5 → Fifth

Example

5/9/2025 → the fifth of November

1/3/1998 → the first of March

3/12/2007 → the third of December

Prepositions

When talking about dates, different prepositions are used. 'In' is used when talking about the year and the month, and 'on' is used when talking about the day. Look:

Example

I'm going to Italy in June.

I may visit her on Sunday.

They were in France in 1998.

Warning!

Note that the names of days and months are proper nouns and their first letter is always in uppercase.
