Expressing Dates for beginners
Telling the date is one of the most common subjects in our daily life. In this lesson, we will learn how to express the date of something.
How Do We Express Dates?
Expressing dates refers to writing the month, day, and year to indicate a specific day on the calendar.
How to Ask About Dates?
When we want to ask about the date, we can use the following questions. The answers to these questions start with “It is…”.
Ordinal Numbers
In order to say the dates, we use ordinal numbers. Look at the list below to learn some of them:
- 1 → First
- 2 → Second
- 3 → Third
- 4 → Fourth
- 5 → Fifth
Names of the Days
Now, let us learn about the days. A week has 7 days. Look below:

Names of Months

How to Write the Dates
Now, when we want to say the date, we must start with the first number which is the day. Then, we move on to the month, and then the year:
5/9/2025 → the
1/3/1998 → the

Prepositions
When we want to talk about dates, we have to use different prepositions. We use 'in' when talking about the year and the month*, and 'on' when talking about the day. Look:
I'm going to Italy
I may visit her
They were in France

Note that the names of days and months are proper nouns and their first letter is always in uppercase.
