What is the verb 'Do'?

The verb 'do' can take different forms based on tense and subject.

Different Forms of 'Do'

In the present tense, 'do' has two forms based on the subject:

Question

To form questions in the present tense, 'do' is used as an auxiliary verb. To form questions, 'do' or 'does' come at the beginning of the sentence and the subject and the base form of the main verb come after it.

To form questions in the past tense, 'did' comes at the beginning of the sentence and the subject and the base form of the main verb follow it. For example

Negation

To make negative sentences with the different forms of auxiliary verb 'do', just add 'not' after them. All forms of 'do' can be contracted in the negative use. Here are some examples:

I did not go to the party./I didn't go to the party.
