The verb 'do' in English is a versatile action word used to perform tasks, ask questions, form negatives, and emphasize statements.

What is the verb 'Do'?

The verb ‘do’ can take different forms based on tense and subject.

Different Forms of 'Do'

In the present tense, 'do' has two forms based on the subject:

Singular Plural
I do we do
you do you do
he/she/it does they do

Look at some example sentences:

I do my homework.

She does her chores.

We do our exercises in the morning.

In the past tense, it has a single form for all subjects:

Singular Plural
I did we did
you did you did
he/she/it did they did

Here are some example sentences:

They did their project.

She did the laundry yesterday.

We did the planning for the trip.

Question

To form questions in the present tense, ‘do’ is used as an auxiliary verb. To form questions, ‘do’ or ‘does’ come at the beginning of the sentence and the subject and the base form of the main verb come after it.

Do you play soccer?

Does she like music?

To form questions in the past tense, ‘did’ comes at the beginning of the sentence and the subject and the base form of the main verb follow it. For example

Did you see the movie?

Did they arrive on time?

Negation

To make negative sentences with the different forms of auxiliary verb ‘do’, just add ‘not’ after them. All forms of 'do' can be contracted in the negative use. Here are some examples:

I do not like coffee./I don't like coffee.

He does not watch TV./He doesn't watch TV.

I did not go to the party./I didn't go to the party.

We didn’t like the food in the new restaurant.
