Punctuation Marks in English

What Is Punctuation?

Punctuation refers to a set of symbols and marks that are used in writing to help make the meaning of sentences and phrases clearer.

Punctuation Marks

There are many different punctuation marks in English. Some of them are:

Full stop (.)

Question mark (?)

Exclamation mark (!)

Now, let us see how each one functions:

Full Stop

'Full stop' or 'period' (.) is a sign that shows a sentence is finished. We use it at the end of sentences that are facts and general truths. Look at the following examples:

Example

The baby is asleep.

There's a children's playground in the park.

Question Mark

'Question mark' (?) shows that the speaker is asking a question and wants to know the answer. Look below:

Example

Where are the kids?

Do you like ice cream?

Exclamation Mark

An 'exclamation mark' (!) shows that the speaker is expressing something with strong emotions such as anger, surprise, happiness, etc. Take a look at the following examples:

Example

Get out of the room now!

The cat is dying!
