used to indicate that one event happens earlier than another event in time

used to indicate what happens as a result of something

used to indicate that something happens or is done before a particular event or point in time

Ex: The guests arrived early to enjoy the cocktail hour prior to the wedding ceremony .
subsequent to [preposition]

following in time or order

Ex: Subsequent to the storm , power outages lasted for days .
in the wake of [preposition]

used to convey that something is happening or exists after and often due to another event or action

Ex: In the wake of the economic downturn , many businesses had to downsize or close .
failing [preposition]

‌used to present an alternative suggestion in case something does not happen or succeed

Ex: Failing a resolution to the conflict , mediation may be necessary .

if a specific situation or event occurs

Ex: In case of rain , the outdoor event will be moved indoors .

Ex: We have a contingency plan in place in the event of severe weather .
