Le verbe « Be » en anglais

Qu'est-ce que le verbe « be » ?

Le verbe « be » peut prendre différentes formes selon le temps et le sujet.

Différentes formes de « be »

Au présent, « be » peut avoir trois formes selon le sujet :

singulier

pluriel

I am (je suis)

we are (nous sommes)

you are (tu es)

you are (vous êtes)

she/he/it is (il/elle est)

they are (ils/elles sont)

Voici quelques exemples de phrases :

Exemple

I am happy.

Je suis heureux.

She is reading a book.

Elle lit un livre.

We are friends.

Nous sommes amis.

Au passé, il a deux formes selon le sujet :

I was (j'étais)

we were (nous étions)

you were (tu étais)

you were (vous étiez)

she/he/it was (elle/il était)

they were (ils/elles étaient)

Voici quelques exemples de phrases :

Il était enseignant.

They were angry at me.

Ils étaient en colère contre moi.

Questions avec « be »

Pour former des questions avec le verbe « be », inversez la place du sujet et du verbe. Par exemple :

He is an actor. → Is he an actor?

Il est acteur. → Est-il acteur ?

They are angry. → Are they angry?

Ils sont en colère. → Sont-ils en colère ?

We were home last night → Were you home last night?

Nous étions chez nous hier soir → Étiez-vous chez vous hier soir ?

Négation

Pour former une phrase négative avec le verbe « be », ajoutez simplement « not » après le verbe.

Exemple

I am studying. → I am not studying.

J'étudie. → Je n'étudie pas.

She is busy. → She is not busy./She isn't busy.

Elle est occupée. → Elle n'est pas occupée.

He was happy to see us. → He was not happy to see us./He wasn’t happy to see us.

Il était heureux de nous voir. → Il n'était pas heureux de nous voir.

You were a student. → You were not a student./You weren’t a student.

Tu étais étudiant. → Tu n'étais pas étudiant.
