What Is Future with 'Going to'?

'Be going to' is a structure that is used to talk about plans and intentions in the future.

Structure

To talk about future using this structure, 'to be' verb + 'going to' is used before the base form of the main verb. For example:

Subject Full Form Short Form
I am going to run. I'm going to run.
He/She/It is going to run. She's/He's/It's going to run.
We/You/They are going to run. We're/You're/They're going to run.

Using 'Going to' to Talk about Plans

Negation

To make a negative sentence with going to, the verb 'to be' is negated by adding 'not' after it.

Affirmative Negative Short Form
I am going to run. I'm not going to run. -
She is going to travel. She is not going to travel. She isn't going to travel.

Questions

To make a question using this structure, the 'to be verb' is placed at the beginning of the sentence followed by the subject and then 'going to' + the base form of verb. Here are some examples:

Statement Question
I am going to run. Are you going to run?
She is going to travel. Is she going to travel?

Use

We can use 'be going to' in the future tense to talk about:

  • Future predictions
  • Future plans

Those students are going to graduate this year.

Here, it is used to talk about prediction.

He is going to go to Chicago next month.

Here, it is used to talk about future plans.
