'Be going to' is a structure that is used to refer to the plans and intentions in the future.

Structure

The structure to form a future tense uses be + going to + the base form of a main verb to talk about the future.

Full Form Short Form
I am going to run. 'm going to run.
He/She/It is going to run. 's going to run.
We/You/They are going to run. 're going to run.

Using 'Going to' to Talk about Plans

Negation

To make a negative sentence with going to, you have to negate the verb 'to be'.

Affirmative Negative Short Form
I am going to run. I'm not going to run. -
She is going to travel. She is not (isn't) going to travel. She isn't going to travel.

Questions

To make a question in the future tense, you have to use the 'be verb' at the beginning of the sentence.

Statement Question
I am going to run. Are you going to run?
She is going to travel. Is she going to travel?

Use

We can use going to in future tense to talk about:

  • Future predictions
  • Future plans

Those students are going to be graduated this year.

Here, it is used to talk about prediction.

He is going to go to Chicago next month.

Here, it is used to talk about future plans.
